Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War

Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War is the 3rd part in the Quest for Glory series. This game has replaced the text command system and instead uses a complete point and click system.

As always, you have the choice of the Fighter, Spell Caster and Thief, and if you decide to import your character into this game, you can choose the paladin (as long as your actions where good natured in the previous game). You also get to choose more stats to help your hero along his journey.

The game begins with you in Shapier, you are having a meeting with the sultan, when out of nowhere a portal opens up. The home town of Rakeesh (whom you met in Quest for Glory 2) is on the brink of civil war. He therefore travels back with his wife (at least i think she's his wife) who's tribe is also involved and they ask you to come with them.

I did not find this game to be as good as the previous games. I did only play this recently, so I don't regard it as highly as I do the first game which i played when i was younger. That game is what I was accustomed to and therefore i was comparing how i felt when I played it to this game. It was more than that though, I just didn't like the story line and they made the puzzles very generic, not many specific to each class of hero. There weren't any guilds and such to go to for each character like there were in previous games. Your character was just there to help settle the disputes and thats it.

People who enjoyed the previous games will like this one, and anyone into RPG's will too.

Stay tuned for the conclusion of this blog series, Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness.

Note: There are 5 games in this series, I just haven't been able to come by a copy of it as it's hard to find.

Quest for Glory 2: Trial By Fire

Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire is the second game in the Quest for Glory series. This one is also a text command based game the same as the first.

You begin the game as the Hero of Spielburg, who has just returned the von Spielburg family to their former glory and who has deafted the evil witch Baba Yaga. You are now in the town of shappeir, home to a race of cat like creatures, 2 of which you met back in Spielburg. They had asked you to return home with them as their town of shappeir was also in need of a hero.

Just like the first game, you get to choose your class. However, you are able to import a Hero from the previous game into this one, importing all of their stats into this game. If you do decide to import a character from the first game and you completed the previous game a certain way (mostly by doing good deeds like helping people and avoiding doing bad things like stealing), you will have the option to play as a paladin. A Paladin is a mix between a fighter and a Spell Caster, with his own special set of spells.

Along the way you will help to save the town of shappeir from a terrible ancient prophecy that comes to life over a series of events as you play the days out.

I must say i didn't enjoy this game that much. This is probably due to the fact I first played this one recently where as I played the first game a long time before hand, so I had fond memories for the first game. Nonetheless it was still great fun, with even more fun and entertaining puzzles to complete. I would highly recommend this to people who enjoy Role Playing games and those who enjoyed the first game.

Hero's Quest

Hero's Quest I: So you want to be a Hero?

First of all I just wanted to say this is one of my most favourite games. It was first released back in 1989 for DOS. It was then again released in the 90's in VGA.

The original version was a text based game, meaning that you could point and click to do things like move and interact with certain objects but for the remainder of things you had to type commands out. For example to cast a spell you would type "cast flamedart" which would cast the flame dart spell. The VGA version eliminated the text commands and replaced it with icons you could click with your mouse.

The game begins with you choosing what class you can be. You can choose from the Mighty Fighter, the Powerful Spell Caster or the Sneaky Thief. Each class has it's own perks and different ways of finishing the adventure. You can however make hybrid classes like a mage with thieving skills or a fighter that can cast spells etc. which brings me to the next part of the game, the skill selection screen where you can add more points to the existing skills chosen when you select a class or add some to skills that your class didn;t learn.

Once all this is completed you start the game in the town of Spielburg as an unknown adventurer, looking to become a famous hero. Along they way you meet a range of characters from the baron von spielburg and family, to wizards and a mysitcal dryad.

This is a great game. Many fun and complicated puzzles to solve and an array of fierce monsters to kill which makes for a very entertaining game and even though it is almost 20 years old, it is still today just as fun to play as it was when I first played it as a young boy in the 90's.
